چکیده
31 The functional coupling of neural circuits between the upper and lower 32 limbs involving rhythmic movements is of interest to both motor control 33 research and rehabilitation science. This coupling can be detected by 34 examining the effect of remote rhythmic limb movement on the modulation 35 of reflex amplitude in stationary limbs. The present study investigated the 36 extent to which rhythmic leg pedaling modulates the amplitude of an early 37 latency (peak 30–70 ms) cutaneous reflex (ELCR) in the upper limb muscles. 38 Thirteen neurologically intact volunteers performed leg pedaling (60 or 90 39 rpm) while simultaneously contracting their arm muscles isometrically. 40 Control experiments included isolated isometric contractions and discrete 41 movements of the leg. ELCRs were evoked by stimulation of the superficial 42 radial nerve with a train of rectangular pulses (3 pulses at 333 Hz, intensity 43 2–2.5× perceptual threshold). Reflex amplitudes were significantly increased 44 in the flexor carpi radialis (FCR) and posterior deltoid (PD), and significantly 45 decreased in the biceps brachii (BB) muscles during leg pedaling compared to 46 during stationary isometric contraction of the lower leg muscles. This effect 47 was also sensitive to cadence. No significant modulation was seen during the 48 isometric contractions or discrete movements of the leg. Additionally, there 49 was no phase-dependent modulation of the ELCR. These findings suggest 50

متن کاملNeural control of rhythmic, cyclical human arm movement: task dependency, nerve specificity and phase modulation of cutaneous reflexes.
1. The organization and pattern of cutaneous reflex modulation during rhythmic cyclical movements of the human upper limbs has received much less attention than that afforded the lower limb. Our working hypothesis is that control mechanisms underlying the modulation of cutaneous reflex amplitude during rhythmic arm movement are similar to those that control reflex modulation in the leg. Thus, w...
متن کاملComparison the effects of two pedaling methods on lower limb muscles activity and fatigue index in road cyclists
The aim of this study was to compare the effects of two pedaling methods on lower limb muscles fatigue index and muscular activity in road cyclists. For this purpose eight road cyclists participated in two separately session in laboratory. They were pedaling with pushing technique in first session and circling (pullingpushing) technique in the other session. Surface electromyography activity...
متن کاملContext-dependent modulation of interlimb cutaneous reflexes in arm muscles as a function of stability threat during walking.
Cutaneous reflexes evoked in the muscles of the arms with electrical stimulation of nerves of the foot ("interlimb reflexes") are observed during walking. These reflexes have been suggested to coordinate the actions of the legs and arms when walking is disturbed. Recently, we showed that cutaneous reflexes evoked in the leg muscles after stimulation at the foot are modulated according to the le...
متن کاملPrior experience does not alter modulation of cutaneous reflexes during manual wheeling and symmetrical arm cycling.
Previous research has reported that training and experience influence H-reflex amplitude during rhythmic activity; however, little research has yet examined the influence of training on cutaneous reflexes. Manual wheelchair users (MWUs) depend on their arms for locomotion. We postulated that the daily dependence and high amount of use of the arms for mobility in MWUs would show differences in c...
